Abbey of Saint Michael the Archangel of Montescaglioso

Abbey of Saint Michael the Archangel of Montescaglioso dates back to around the middle of the 11th century, when the Benedictine monastic community took over many of the original Greek religious communities.

In the late Middle Ages, it fell into disrepair and had to be reconstructed at the end of the 1400s. The central nucleus of the abbey is made up of an eastern monastery and the church, reconstructed by the Benedictine congregation of Saint Giustina of Padova. (source: APT of Basilicata)
